The leaves are sprouting on the trees, the flowers are starting to come up, the grass is growing. It is a time to rediscover ourselves. Another Mercury Retrograde has started giving us the chance to go within in this season of newness and find those parts of ourselves that are ready to emerge.

How can we use this time to really catapult ourselves forward?

First of all, during mercury retrogrades our intuition is even more acute. Slow down - take some time for contemplation and review. Pay close attention to the information your intuition is giving you - this is a great time to gain some clarity and get solutions to situations and issues that have seemed overwhelming or the answer has been out of reach. Once the retrograde is over - you can take action.

Spend some time in nature - reground yourself and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. It will feed your soul. Bring that fresh energy of beauty into your everyday life - buy some fresh cut flowers and put them on your desk.

Clean out your closets, your drawers, etc. Throw away, donate or sell anything that you do not love or need. This will create space for new things to come into your life.

Take time to just "be". We are at our best when we are not rushing around and pushing ourselves to the limit. Just "be" and open up to whatever brings you joy. Make a list of the people or things that bring you joy and make a new commitment to bring more of that into your life.

Spring is my favorite time of year. I love watching all the new life sprouting up. Anticipation is in the air. It is a time to be visible and make new connections. There are so many possibilities open to us. Let's embrace this exciting time and create a new path of opportunity.

What About Prosperity?

I have heard it said that "we are to teach what we need to learn". In fact, in the last week I have run across this phrase 3 different times. I am certainly being given a message! Which brings me to my story:

The other day I was cleaning the shower/bathtub in my kids bathroom when my daughter told me that the drain was extremely clogged. I said I didn't realize this and why didn't she tell me it was this bad. She explained that she had mentioned this to me before. Now I have to say that being a single mom raising three children alone 24/7 is very demanding and challenging. Add to that taking care of a house alone - some things just slip through the cracks. So I thought......

I immediately went out the next day to buy some drain opener. After applying the drain opener, not only did the bathtub drain become unclogged, but the sink drain (which I tried to unclog about a month ago) also cleared up. So what does this have to do with prosperity?

First of all, according to Feng Shui, this bathroom happens to be in the prosperity section of my house. So a clogged drain in this area is really important to look at from an energy perspective. Secondly, the day before, I had been working through a money exercise to gain some new clarity about my beliefs around money. Even though I have worked on my money beliefs many times over, this exercise brought up some new insights into beliefs that I was now ready to let go of. Our beliefs run deep and many times we need to peel back the layers like peeling an onion to get to these deep seated patterns. It can take years of work.

After doing the money exercise, I discovered that I was still hanging on to beliefs such as: "the love of money is the root of all evil", "wealthy people are mean and uncaring", "champagne taste on a beer man's salary". I also believed deep down that I could not support myself using my gifts and talents because my mother used to tell time after time after time "you'll never make any money at that". I have always been extremely artistic and musical and no matter what vocation I told her I wanted to go into, she would give that response, thus completely disempowering me. I was raised to believe that I could not support myself with my talents so I had to marry someone who was more marketable. My place was to cheer him on and support him.

Working through that exercise, I was able to push aside those old beliefs and see that I do in fact LOVE MONEY and it's ok! I love money because is gives opportunities, possibilities, freedom and fun! I deserve to be happy and abundant - and I don't have to "do" anything or "be" anything. I just have to be me - it is my inherent birthright to be abundant - it is everyone's birthright. Certainly, I had heard this before, but I was really able to embrace it at a deep level this time. I LOVE MONEY! Saying it just makes me happy and tingly.

I was also able to see that even though the malicious actions of my ex-husband forced me into bankruptcy and foreclosure, my beliefs about money and my ability to support myself were stalling my efforts to work my way out.

So how does all of this tie together? Unclogging these drains was very symbolic and in direct alignment with the prosperity beliefs I had just let go of. I was not able to see that these drains needed unclogging until I was ready to let go of the beliefs that were holding everything in place. I also needed to be in a space where I could replace those old beliefs with new beliefs that I would truly embrace and that really resonated with me.

I want to impress the fact that uttering a simple affirmation about prosperity is not a quick fix solution. It can be very disempowering to recite affirmations day after day with no outward signs of change. Affirmations can work, but we have to be willing to go deep inside and find those beliefs that are not in alignment with what we are wanting to create. We all have deep subconscious beliefs we received as children that have to be uncovered and released first before we can move forward. Only then can we completely embrace the new.

Do you need help discovering your limiting beliefs? Now I am not really a fan of wild rides at amusement parks - I like things smooth and flowing - so understandably things have been quite challenging for me to say the least. The catalyst for this wild ride? A huge betrayal in my marriage about 10 years ago. Long story short, my husband, at the time, betrayed me by taking sides with another couple we were friends with creating an atmosphere of dishonesty, craziness, insecurity and blame (towards me). Needless to say, I was devastated, shocked and disillusioned. I stood at that place in time wondering how I had come to that point. It was not a place I had envisioned for myself as I dreamed of my life many years before. What had gone wrong? I thought that I had good values and ethics and integrity. Yet the people in my life did not reflect that, least of all my husband. Where had things gone off track? We had 3 beautiful children, a nice home, cars, vacations, etc. - all the things that looked good on the outside, but on the inside I was living a nightmare.

I knew that I had to find the answers to these questions in order to move myself out of this heart-breaking place. I started on a quest of personal discovery determined to unearth what was going on inside of me that had caused this outer manifestation. At the time, I was watching "The Oprah Show" and "Dr. Phil" learning to start having boundaries and taking care of myself - realizing that how I wanted to be treated and how I was being treated were not the same. One day, Oprah had Gary Zukav, the author of "The Seat of The Soul" on her show. I was so intrigued with Gary - I loved his energy and his way of explaining things about life in a simple and non-judgmental manner. He was so peaceful and comforting. I thought - "he's so cool - I want to be like that!"

Little did I know what I was unleashing when I said those words. It was like a hurricane, tornado and tsunami moved through my life all at once. I woke up to the realization that I was in an abusive marriage - hence the reason for the craziness with the couple we were friends with. It was part of my husband's attempt to make me crazy and to diminish, belittle and isolate me. That incident, which went on for about 6 months was nothing compared to what I faced after I decided to leave him 3 years later - after attempting therapy to repair the problems that existed. Many times I have felt like I was in a "made for TV" movie.

The rage and retaliation of an abusive man is monumental when you leave him. I had all of my bank accounts shut down so that I had no access to money. I had been a stay-at-home mom and had no money of my own. The divorce process was dragged out to purposely put me in debt so that I was forced into signing over joint custody of my children before any financial negotiations would take place. I was told I would have to go back to work after having stayed at home with my children for 10 years - my earning potential was conveniently skewed on the high end so that my husband would have to pay less spousal maintenance. I went from living in a million dollar home to a 2 bedroom apartment with my 3 children.

That was just the divorce process. Then came the 2nd wave - the post divorce strategy. I was taken to court by my ex-husband for 3 different litigations after my divorce. He was going to bury me by forcing me to spend every last dollar of my settlement in court and the court system was only too happy to oblige. Two years after our divorce, I was in court defending against a child support reduction and contempt charges because my children refused to live with their father anymore - he had been abusing them as well. My attorneys fees were between $4000 and $7000/month that year. Needless to say, I lost all of my retirement savings. I was also unable to work or build a career because of the intensity of the litigation. My debt skyrocketed. I did end up winning both decisions, but at a huge financial cost. To top it off, I won full custody of my children which was a great thing, but they were now living with me full time so I was raising them alone.

Meanwhile, people who lived in our community that were friends with my ex-husband were harassing me and my children at their sporting events - staring us down and telling my kids that they should go see their dad.

Then came the 3rd wave, another contempt charge because my children refused to attend therapy - they didn't like being strong-armed by overly eager and incompetent therapists. I won that decision as well; however, with attorneys fees of $300/hour - $60 for every phone call - it adds up. My financial situation collapsed. I had to file bankruptcy and my house went into foreclosure. The house that I had bought after the divorce was being taken from me. The rug was being pulled out from under me again.

How did I get through all of this? I read every book I could find on spirituality, metaphysics, esoteric teachings, etc. I attended workshops and classes developing my intuitive gifts and healing abilities. I worked with spiritual teachers and started a degree in spirituality. I went deep, deep into myself to uncover my strength and wisdom. Whenever something would come up that felt unbearable, I would read - trying to change my perspective and find hope, and I would pray. There were times I was so scared, I could barely breath. That is when I would pray the most. Miraculously, my prayers were answered. I had so many things turn around and change - things that unexplainably would suddenly go my way when the odds were against me. I was able to accomplish things that were unheard of in the family court system. I was told over and over they would never happen - never go my way, but they did.

Why am I telling you all of this? (First of all, this is just a small recounting of the events that took place - the whole story would take a book or two.) Because I want people to have an awareness of what abuse is like. It doesn't always look like black eyes, although it can. Many men who are abusive are very successful professional men like my ex-husband. That makes it even worse because they are well respected in the community and harder to discredit. It is hard for people to believe that someone who appears so nice and amiable in public could be such a nightmare in private. Please think twice if you know a woman who might be in this kind of situation - she needs your help and your support.

Secondly, I believe that I had these experiences for a reason. One reason was to raise the awareness of abuse in this country and to help people heal from abuse. The other reason was that I wanted to be a peaceful, secure and strong individual that people took seriously. As difficult as these experiences were, they made me who I am today and they are the reason that I do the work that I do. I have been turned upside down and inside out numerous times. I have learned to weather the storms and to know that I can make it no matter what comes my way. I have the most wonderful relationship with my children, which is the most important part of all. Little did I know when I said that I wanted to be like Gary Zukav what that was going to entail. But rather than being like him, I have found that I am really, truly being me.

Anger Gets a Bad Rap

Anger is a necessary emotion that we all need to express at certain times. However, many of us (mostly women) have been taught that anger is unattractive and have consequently repressed it leaving ourselves vulnerable to the manipulation of others. Personally, I was not allowed any anger growing up. In my family, I was told to be quiet and be pretty - it was extremely difficult for me as I had truths inside that wanted to come out. I paid a high price for burying my anger. It took me years of working on myself before I was able to uncover it and use it to my advantage.

Anger is an essential tool in our toolbox. It is a warning sign letting us know when something is not right - for instance, when someone is invading our boundaries or trying to harm us. Many times we push those warning signals away not wanting to look like we are over-reacting - not wanting to be abrupt or unfriendly. That is a big mistake. We need anger to protect ourselves.

Anger can fuel our passions - especially anger over injustice to another that causes us to act on their behalf. Many of the greatest movements in history were the result of anger in the face of injustice. We have been led to believe (by religions) that the great masters never became angry and yet, Jesus showed anger towards the merchants in the temple and even became physical with his anger - over-turning their tables.

We are all aware of the double standard that it's okay for a man to get angry, but if a woman gets angry, she is labeled with the B-word. In the patriarchal society we live in, this certainly keeps us (women) in our place. Unfortunately, with dire consequences. It has led to the oppression of an important part of the balance of humanity. The feminine essence. We have seen this play out to extremes as our world is now in deep suffering.

In their book "Ask and it is Given", Abraham-Hicks, list the 22 emotions from highest vibration to lowest vibration. I have copied it below because I believe it to be so powerful and helpful.

1. Joy/Knowledge/Empowerment/Freedom/Love/Appreciation
2. Passion
3. Enthusiasm/Eagerness/Happiness
4. Positive Expectation/Belief
5. Optimism
6. Hopefulness
7. Contentment
8. Boredom
9. Pessimism
10. Frustration/Irritation/Impatience
11. Overwhelm
12. Disappointment
13. Doubt
14. Worry
15. Blame
16. Discouragement
17. Anger
18. Revenge
19. Hatred/Rage
20. Jealousy
21. Insecurity/Guilt/Unworthiness
22. Fear/Grief/Depression/Despair/Powerlessness

For me, one of the most enlightening experiences I had was when I heard Abraham-Hicks speak about anger. If you look at this list, you will see that anger is in the 17th position. It is not the lowest level vibration - despair and powerlessness are the lowest. My point is that if you are in despair and powerlessness, you are easy to manipulate and control. People can walk all over you. When you jump to anger to stand up for yourself, it feels fabulous because you have raised your vibration. After that, you may go on up to blame because you are realizing someone acted in a way that you believe caused your anger and that feels even better. In fact, it feels wonderful because you are working your way up the scale becoming empowered.

However, someone may say to you that you shouldn't be angry and you shouldn't blame, it is not healthy - it is not "Christian". Not realizing that you are actually in a higher vibrating emotion, you immediately feel guilty and slide back down into despair again - right where they want you. Others are uncomfortable when you are angry because they most certainly will have to change in order to relate to you and they don't want to do that. They want you quiet and powerless - to stay the way they want you to be - it is easier and more convenient for them. But what is best for you?

Certainly, staying in anger indefinitely is not the goal. Misplaced anger can cause great harm. Eventually, you will need to move up to higher level emotions if you want to continue your journey of empowerment. However, it is not an awful thing to be angry. In fact, I really believe that anger is very attractive when used in the right way. It drives passion and cuts through complacency. It shows strength and courage.

I am grateful to my anger - it has helped me get through some very difficult situations and to weed out the people in my life that did not have my best interests at heart.

If you haven't done so, give yourself the gift of being angry - it is invigorating!

"Enchanted" - a Call to the Feminine

The movie "Enchanted" is a fairytale with that famous feel-good ending where the prince and princess conquer the dragon and live happily ever after - at first glance. However, if we dig deeper, there is so much more to uncover. In this story, it is the woman who saves the man and that is the start of my discussion. There are so many spiritual meanings to look at. I will take a look at a few to make my point.

In the beginning of the story, after being pushed into the well in Andalasia by her evil step-mother to be, innocent Giselle lands in brash and callous present day New York City wearing her wedding gown. She is wandering around trying to find her way back to the castle, terribly lost. She believes in the goodness of people and innocently asks for directions - with no success. She ends up on top of a billboard that looks like a castle trying to find her way back. However, there is no going back at this point.

Robert, a single father, is riding with his daughter in a taxi cab that happens to stop near the billboard. The little girl notices that there is a princess on top of the billboard and wonders why. Being an inquisitive and carefree child, she jumps out of the taxi to help the princess. Her father reluctantly follows admonishing her for leaving the safety of the taxi. They end up offering refuge to Giselle for the night not realizing that their lives are about to change. In her vulnerability and openness, Giselle has already inched her way into their hearts.

The next morning, Giselle awakes and realizes how messy their apartment is - "this will never do" she says. She begins calling on her nature friends to help clean things up while singing a song to lighten the task. She is beginning the transformation process - cleaning up and giving clarity - softening the rough male edges. Enter in Nancy (dressed in a typical neutral office attire with slacks - more masculine looking than feminine), his fiance who immediately notices the clean apartment and is not too happy that he has allowed a woman to spend the night when she has been barred from this privilege. Giselle, tells Robert that his fiance is lovely as she has no need or desire to compete.

Giselle goes to the office with Robert in a dress she made from his curtains, which is very feminine, flowing and fresh - (not sleazy or provocative) and also out of character with the straight lines of the New York business world. The flow of her gown represents her conscious state - she is in the flow with universal energy. She meets a couple he is helping to get divorced and immediately dissolves into tears at the news of the end of their relationship. No one can believe she is crying - people get divorced every day. They try to remove her from the conversation. She tells the woman how her eyes sparkle and that she can't believe her husband would not want to be with her. The couple appear dumbfounded.

Next, Robert takes Giselle for a walk in the park. She is shocked to find out that it has taken him 5 years to propose to Nancy and comments, "no wonder she is angry". She teaches him how to show a woman that you love her with a song. He is embarrassed that she is singing and tells her to stop, but others in the park begin to join her song. Robert is amazed. Her nurturing, caring, loving presences is inspiring and energizing - people are attracted to her. She encourages Robert to send flowers to Nancy with an invitation to a ball - a woman's secret dream. His rift with Nancy is instantly repaired.

Giselle knows without a doubt that Edward, her prince is coming for her. She is steadfast in her belief and trust. When Robert tells her that she is crazy and wrong for believing this - she stands up to him, getting angry. She will not back down. She knows that commitment is possible and she doesn't need to do anything, but radiate and be herself and Edward will come for her. This is the nature of the active masculine seeking the passive feminine (I don't mean passive in a negative way). Yet, she is starting to have feelings for Robert - he needs her. She has polished his rough edges and uncovered what is underneath - he is coming to life. She realizes he may be the one she has been looking for.

Edward does indeed come the next morning. He sings his devotion to Giselle and is ready to protect her. Once again Robert is amazed at the singing. This kind of devotion seems corny and ridiculous to him - it can't be real. Giselle goes off with Edward - even though she is not sure she feels the same way about him. Robert and his daughter are sad - this feminine presence that ignited a spark in them has left.

Giselle requests a "date" with Edward before they leave for Anastasia. She and Edward attend the same ball as Robert and Nancy. Giselle and Robert dance together - something he never does and he ends up singing to her. His transformation is complete - she has inspired his devotion. Yet he is not completely sure that this is possible in just a few days - still stuck in his old belief system. She leaves the ball with Edward - yet she is sad about leaving Robert. On their way out, the wicked Queen dressed as the old hag finds Giselle alone and convinces her to take a bite of an apple to end her sadness. She is poisoned and falls unconscious.

Edward discovers her and yells for help. Robert comes to her side. The Queen's assistant explains that Giselle has been poisoned. Edward doesn't know what to do. It is Robert that reminds him that "true love's kiss" will revive her - the most powerful thing in the world. Edward kisses her, but she does not wake up. He realizes that Robert is her true love and tells Robert that he must kiss her and Nancy agrees. Robert argues that he can't possibly be in love with her this quickly - yet he realizes that he is. Realizing he needs her, he asks her not to leave him and kisses her. She awakes telling him that she knew it was him. The feminine is brought back to life. Ah, but the story doesn't end here.

The evil Queen then morphs into a dragon wanting revenge because she has been discovered and will loose her thrown. She is going to kill Giselle, but Robert stands ready to protect her. The dragon scoops up Robert and Giselle follows with a sword. Her friend, Pip, the chipmunk is finally released and together - Pip and Giselle save Robert and kill the dragon. Nancy re-discovers her feminine nature - she and Edward fall in love and return to Andalasia. They all live happily ever after.

What is this story telling us? I believe many things. It is Robert that is saved by Giselle. She refines his rough edges, brings creativity and color to his life and helps him to be a gentleman. He realizes he needs her to inspire him and love him. The masculine essence without the feminine is rough, brash and sloppy. It needs the feminine to soften, nurture and inspire. Giselle is not afraid to be a soft, gentle, loving woman - the feminine essence. She is in harmony with nature and receives its assistance. She dresses feminine, but dignified and classy. She doesn't need to be provocative or sleazy to capture attention - that would degrade her.

Giselle cries about the divorcing couple - the end of a relationship. The other characters are astonished at this. It seems we have become so callous and cold in our society. We have forgotten the sacredness of relationship. Divorces are commonplace. In addition, grieving about divorce is not encouraged, even though it is clearly the death of a relationship. People are expected to buck up and move on. I realize that in many cases divorce is the right action - especially where abuse and addiction are involved. My own divorce was the result of abuse. Yet it is too easy in some cases, used as a way to blame someone else for our shortcomings. 74% of divorces are instigated by women who say they are tired of being treated without respect or adoration. Are we as women willing to take a stand and raise our expectations? Are we willing to inspire men and hold them accountable to our needs? The couple Giselle encounters in the story end up rethinking their divorce - realizing that relationships are hard work and theirs is worth fighting for. How many relationships could be saved with this kind of paradigm shift - how many marriages would never happen?

In the story, Nancy, Robert's finance, was content with the status quo. She dressed in neutral, masculine-type clothing - fitting in with the masculine world rather than uniquely standing out in her feminine authenticity. She let Robert be - without expecting the best from him. She did not use her feminine instincts to inspire him or teach him how to be a gentleman - I don't think she knew how. Many women today do not know how to inspire a man with their wisdom - they are content to let men decide what makes a woman desirable. That is why women are constantly degraded in television shows, movies, pornagraphic material, etc. The masculine influence has gone unchecked.

Back to the story. In the end, Giselle finds her inner warrior and carries the sword to slay the dragon. It is essentially nature (Pip, the chipmunk) that brings down the dragon as the masculine and feminine are once again in balance. The tyrannical queen is destroyed because she has forgotten her nurturing, loving side and seeks outer power rather than power from within.

To sum up, I believe our society needs the feminine now more than ever to balance the dominant masculine that has been running the show for centuries. We are living in a chaotic time caused by this imbalance. We, as women need to stand up for ourselves and reclaim our wisdom and powerful presence. We need to start now before it is too late.

P.S. We feel the pressure to buy the right gifts and create memorable parties and gatherings. In fact, all year long we are striving to get ahead, to make it to the next level, to better ourselves, to bring great service to others - to improve our image. Even though striving to accomplish these things is a noble pursuit, it can take us over and keep us in a constant state of doing instead of being. We forget to stop and enjoy our successes. I believe this season is not only a time to share goodwill with others, but also to share goodwill with ourselves. To focus on what is most important in our lives and to focus on how valuable we are.

How can we anchor the feeling of peace inside of us this season? Our outer image is a reflection of what is going on inside of us. When we stop and applaud ourselves for what we have accomplished, it instills a feeling of value and worthiness deep inside of us. It silences our inner critic. That feeling of value transfers into everything that we do - every interaction that we have. It builds a foundation of peace and contentment that is priceless. Other people are attracted to that peacefulness. Situations are drawn to us easily and effortlessly.

I believe that we are constantly striving to find our connection to a greater power, to feel inner happiness and peace, and to give of ourselves in a meaningful way. The Christmas season is the perfect time to reflect on this. We have been taught to believe that outer experience rules inner experience, but it is just the opposite - inner rules outer. When we find that place of inner peace and contentment, there is nothing that can get in our way. People and situations that used to cause fear and pain are transformed. Our outer experiences become richer and more meaningful. We are different and in response, our world becomes different.

My wish for you this season is that you are able to discover this solid, content and peaceful place inside. It would be the best gift you could give to yourself and to others. Once you find that place inside of you, everything else is just icing on the cake.

Look Great and Feel Great this Holiday Season

With Thanksgiving next week, we will be in the throws of the holiday season, including holiday parties and get togethers. It is easy to get lost in all of the "hustle and bustle". Given the current economic situation, we may have less to work with this year or we may just feel we want to focus on the real meaning of the season rather than spending ourselves into oblivion. What can we do to look great and maintain our sanity?

Well first of all, I do believe that we need to continue to invest in ourselves. If we do not spend time, energy and money on ourselves, we shut down the flow. I know that we may have less to work with financially, and when that happens, we usually cut out all the unnecessary luxuries - which is usually personal care for ourselves. This is a huge mistake. Yes, we may need to cut back, but we still need to continue to honor our own importance - especially when times are rough - that's when we need it the most. We need to continue to invest in ourselves and reinforce the belief that we are worth it.

Here are some ideas:

Giving ourselves the gift of time costs nothing and yet the benefits we reap are huge. A walk in nature, reading a good book, meditation, yoga, etc. instantly revitalize us.

Even spending small amounts of money on ourselves lifts our energy. A new candle, a new lipstick (try a shade of pink - it is the most flattering - just choose a shade that compliments your skin tone), finding a new blouse or scarf on sale to wear for a holiday gathering, a favorite tea - all are inexpensive ways to treat ourselves.

I am a big believer in the healing power of massage - even if you can only go once a month or once every other month. Giving to yourself in this way is so important and can help in preventing illness, which with prescriptions, doctor visits and lost wages, can ultimately cost even more time and money.

A manicure or pedicure is another way to instantly feel fabulous. With the opening of many "just nails" salons in the last few years, these services are much more affordable.

When you commit to taking care of yourself, even when times are tough - especially when times are tough, you will find that you feel better and have more energy. When you feel great, you look great. Your inner radiance comes right through. When you make a commitment to self-care, the universe responds in bringing people and events into your life that honor your value because you are telling the universe that you are valuable.

P.S. There was talk about how competitive the job market is right now and how many brilliant and talented people are looking for jobs. The question asked was "How can someone compete in that environment?" The keyword here is compete. The point is - we do not need to compete. We are enough just the way we are. When we start comparing ourselves to others, we dis-empower ourselves. We each have something unique to offer the world. There is no one else on this earth that can deliver our gifts and talents in our own unique way. Once we really "get" that, there is no stopping us. All the laws of the universe come together and work in our favor. When we develop an image of ourselves that is in alignment with who we are at our core, and move forward from that image, we are in the flow.

It is sometimes challenging to find our true image after all of the years we have been programmed to be and do what others thought was best for us. Many times it takes the chaos of transition to swirl us around and shake us up so that we can detach from that programming and really find ourselves. This is the gift waiting for us if we have the courage to make the journey to find it. It is not easy. At times, it is extremely frightening and overwhelming. Everything that we relied on for our security may be gone, wiped out. But it will be worth it. Our task is to begin to build a new foundation. A foundation based on values and beliefs that serve us. Once we have this new foundation, it will be solid enough to support a skyscraper. Then, we can really expand into our greatness.

This type of transformation is what I work on with my clients. My passion is to help them find that authentic place inside and develop an image that expresses their inner light. Despite the challenges they are facing, I want to help them get excited about who they are. When they are in an excited state, they are in a place to move through challenges more easily and attract great things into their lives.

Personally, I have always believed that I have something special to offer the world. I have had to do some digging to find it, through lots of pain and uncertainty - chaos was a catalyst. I am not sure where this belief came from as my parents didn't have the ability to foster it in me. I think it must have come from within me - some place very deep at my soul level and somehow, despite all of the challenges and low points in my life, I have been able to hang on to it. I am grateful for that. I have never felt the need to compete with others, I have done enough competing with myself - that is the part I have needed to work on. To be kinder and gentler with myself.

The Empire Within System - Part 2

Last week I listed the first 3 steps of "The Empire Within System", which is a 7-step process I developed to help my clients transform themselves. It is a 7-step process I developed to help my clients transform themselves. I have listed the first 3 steps below and next week, I will finish with the final 4 steps.

1. Determine What Your Current Image is Reflecting to Others

You need to be honest about where you currently are in order to see the next steps to where you want to go. We know this can be intimidating - we take care to do it in the most compassionate way, while getting to the truth. To make big changes, you need to start taking your image seriously. It is the catalyst to success in all areas of your life. We look at the ways image has been holding you back and why it is so important to take the steps to invest in yourself. We go over your total image from head to toe, verbal/non-verbal, etc., in order to make sure your image makeover is complete.

2. Get Clear on What you Want to Represent to the World

What is currently going on in your life and how would you like things to change? What do you want to start attracting? We look at how we can work to accomplish your transformation to start bringing the things you desire into your life. Learn how to play BIG with your image and what it communicates to others. You'll have the understanding and ability to put image and beauty at the top of your list.

Once we know our starting point, we can begin to develop a plan of action. We immediately tune-in to you - getting information on your unique, authentic style and the process needed to bring it out. We identify all of the areas for improvement and work our way down the list - closet makeover, personal shopping, hair, make-up, skin-care, and communication skills.

3. Change Your Wardrobe - Closet Makeover/Shopping Kit

It is important to go through your closet and evaluate what works and what doesn't. Clothing that does not flatter you, is old, out-of-style, etc. drains your energy. We need to clear the way for new, wonderful things to come into your life. We'll give you an honest assessment of what to keep and what to let go of. We also give you tips on how to create multiple outfits from the clothing that you already own and give recommendations on what items to add.

After working in your closet, we brainstorm a personal shopping trip to add items that maximize what you currently own, while also creating brand new "attention grabbing" outfits that represent your authentic self and instantly transform you. You will have a blast trying on multiple outfits personally selected with your specific needs and wants in mind - you will not need to leave the dressing room. You will receive the VIP, red carpet treatment - everything is brought to you. Instead of going home, frustrated and empty-handed, you will have multiple outfits to choose from.

We offer recommendations on hairstyle and give you tips on good skin-care and make-up techniques. If needed, we are able to refer you to fabulous salons and specialists for hair, nail and brow services. We also talk about the basics in verbal/non-verbal communication and help you refine your skills.

What is "Class" and How Do You Get It?

Do you ever hear someone say "she's classy" or "he's got class"? What does that really mean? This past week, I had a potential client tell me he thought I had "class" and wanted me to teach it to his daughter. I have to say this is one of the highest compliments I could have ever received and it started me thinking. When I think about having "class", these descriptions come to mind: manners/etiquette, kindness, generosity, authenticity, personal responsibility, personal accountability, values, integrity, willing to go the extra mile, not worrying about what others are doing, no need to "balance the scales", above pettiness, having and operating from high standards, compassion and empathy, selflessness, boundaries, honesty, ethical, not participating in gossip, high level of being, regard for others, reverence for life, self-care, personal excellence, spiritual foundation, humility, humbleness, self-love, self-esteem or soul-esteem, attractive, polished, well-dressed. It's amazing that one word can encompass so many traits.

I believe that being "classy" is something that you work towards - maintaining a level of excellence in all aspects of your life - being in harmony. It is accomplished by the choices you make each and every day. Making the decision that you are going to live life at the highest level possible and committing to it with each choice you make that is alignment with that decision. Are we born with "class"? I think we are born with the capacity to have "class" - but, we have to work for it - it comes with experience and maturity. How we conduct ourselves as we meet life's challenges moves us towards or away from having "class". It is ultimately our decision. Even if we are not living life at that highest level, we are always given a chance to start anew. Yes, it may take some time to turn our reputation around and change how others perceive us, but if we are committed to changing what is on the inside, we can do it - one step at at time.

It is interesting that when I thought of "class", the first descriptions that came to mind were personality traits and values. While I believe that you can look classy, if you do not have the inner qualities to back it up, the picture quickly falls apart. In order to truly have "class" or be "classy", you have to have a congruence between your inner and outer image.

Does being "classy" mean we are perfect or never make mistakes? No way - mistakes or "miss takes" are part of learning and growing - we are all works in progress. It is the way we handle mistakes - taking responsibility and being accountable, also being understanding with ourselves and not beating ourselves up - treating ourselves with "class" that makes the difference.

I want to share a story of something that really touched me this week. I was listening to Michael Neill's "Super Coach" show on Hayhouse Radio. He had a listener that called in despair because she was going through a divorce and said her husband was leaving her without health insurance, her sisters and brothers would not help her, and she felt alone and really scared. Michael was so compassionate and caring. First, he used a technique he said he learned to help people suffering from Post Traumatic Stress - getting her to connect to something that's beyond the physical body and see that she had a diamond within that was always shining no matter what happened. Next he told her his own personal story of losing his job a few years back and being left without insurance when his wife was 6 months pregnant. He said he had had to humble himself and go to the state offices and request their help. He said he was in tears when he did so. What I thought was the most wonderful thing is that he told this caller to give her email address to him and he would find out what she needed to do to get insurance in her state. I was in tears as I listened to this exchange. Having been through a divorce, feeling deserted, scared and alone, I could really relate to the kindness he was showing this woman. That is class!

Changing Seasons in Your Closet

As the seasons change, it is also time to change over our closets. I find that it helps to either have separate closets for summer and winter seasons, or if you have one closet, rotate clothes for the current season to the front so they are easy to access. As in the spring, this is a good time to evaluate what is in your closet. Any items that do not fit, are stained, or haven't been worn in the last year need to go - either to a consignment shop if they are in good condition or donated to your favorite charity. I just did this myself this past weekend and it felt great to clear things out and get organized. Once you have cleared up and organized your space, you are better able to assess what items you may need to add to fill in the gaps. And since nature abhors a vacuum, you have created a space or an opening for new things to flow into.

What are some ideas to quickly update your fall/winter wardrobe?

For women:

accessories such as shoes, boots, belts and scarves

blouses or shells in an updated style and current fall color like deep purple or green to wear with your suits

a new winter coat or jacket to bring in some pizazz

a new piece of bold jewelry that can be worn with many outfits

a new pair of jeans - dark wash in boot cut or wide leg are the most flattering

For men:

a couple of new ties and shirts

a new pair of jeans

a new sweater or casual shirts in this seasons colors to wear with jeans or khakis

new shoes

It is also time to start thinking about holiday party season. If you are like me, you don't want to wear the same outfit year after year. Now is a good time to start planning and get into stores while there is still a good selection of sizes available. Look for sparkles and metallics as great pieces to add to black pants or a black skirt this year. A simple black dress with a wrap and a statement piece of jewelry is always an easy option. And speaking of the holidays - leave the themed holiday sweatshirts at home (please). Nothing will date you more. When in doubt, think classic and elegant and you will never go wrong.

Why Fashion Is Not Just Superficial

Sometimes I think we can get into a mindset where we think fashion is superficial. Seeing some of the far-out fashions on the runway can lead us to think that it is a whole different world. It is hard to relate those images to our everyday lives. Yet, fashion is creative and expressive - it is art. Certainly, many of the images we see on runways are not practical, but they can inspire us to bring beauty into our own lives through our clothing.

Fashion plays an important part in how we feel about ourselves because it is related to image. If we feel our image on the outside is beautiful, it helps us to make that leap towards loving ourselves on the inside as well. Then, we are on our way to gaining congruence between our inner and outer image and we can move forward towards success with a solid sense of who we are. We are in alignment. I know that during some of my most challenging times, it was comforting to me to at least have something great to wear. It lifted my spirits and helped me to feel better about myself.

People are attracted to beautiful things because they are harmonious. Therefore, if we are dressed well, our attraction factor increases immensely. Also, we are more likely to be trusted. I think that part of the reason why we think fashion is superficial is because it is too overwhelming for us to deal with, especially if we feel we don't know how to dress. So, rather than figure it out or get help, we just push it aside by saying it's not important. Getting help and investing in ourselves is so important. It can be the catalyst that takes us to that next level in our lives.

Do you realize that in the first 7 seconds someone sees you, they are making unconscious judgments about you because of the way you are dressed? Your lifestyle is determined - from your income level to your education level and everything in between. Even though we are reminded not to "judge a book by its cover", we do. That being said, why not use it to our advantage.

ASSIGNMENT:

Take some time by yourself to reflect on the personal and/or professional goals you want to accomplish. What kind of image do you want to project in order to reach those goals? Then, take a risk and ask your friends or relatives what your image is currently reflecting. If what you want to project is not in alignment with what you are reflecting to others, you will have a starting point for re-creating yourself.

What Shoes are You Walking In?

As I was helping a client select shoes recently, I watched her work to embrace the change that these shoes were going to bring to her life. I know that seems like a lot for just a pair of shoes, but I believe that small things can sometimes give us the biggest insights. She had been wearing a particular style of shoe for quite some time that was very low key and casual. A style that felt safe and didn't attract much attention. The shoes I were suggesting for her were fun and a bit sassy - to give an added dimension to the clothes we picked out. She told me during our information gathering session that she didn't have anything in her closet that was red (be careful what you ask for) - well we stumbled on some patent red clogs that were great. She tried them on and kept walking in the shoes back and forth. I could sense she was trying to adapt to the feeling they emanated and the attitude they invoked. Red shoes?! - was she ready for this transformation?

Clothing can give us a different attitude about ourselves if we are open to it. Shoes are big part of this - they complete the outfit. What shoes do you wear? What do they represent about you? Are your shoes old and tired looking - needing to be replaced? Is their style outdated - or predictable for you? Maybe your shoes reflect comfort and relaxation. Maybe they are smart, sassy, sexy (ooh I said that word!) and fun! If not, why not? Can you allow yourself to open up to that? Are you waiting for a special occasion? Why wait? Why not now? Why not today? What are your excuses - too expensive, not in the budget, too hard to walk in, too frivolous, I don't have time to shop, I don't want to be bothered. Are these some of the same excuses you use in other areas of your life?

What excuses are you using to hold yourself back? As we see with the sad death of Patrick Swayze at the young age of 57, our tomorrows are not guaranteed. Yes change can be frightening, but it is necessary and imminent for our growth. We are in a season of change right now with the fall equinox approaching. As we see the beauty in the changing leaves - can we see and embrace the beauty of change in our lives? Change is coming whether we like it or not - it is inevitable. Relaxing into the change and letting go can make the transformation smoother and let us open up to the beauty in it. Caroline Myss advises us to stay in our inner castle - our inner power when dealing with the tides of change - I agree.

Clothing and shoes are tools we can use to help us stay in our power as we work through the unknown factors of change. Yet, ultimately, we will find that we don't really need these tools. As Dorothy discovered in the Wizard of Oz - the power was not in the shoes - it was in her. The good witch tells her "she had it all along".

The Beauty In Everyday Life

We have been living in a time where the pursuit of material things has been our major focus. We were taught to believe that acquiring "things" would make us happy. We were told by marketers and advertisers on a daily basis how their "things" would fill our lives with joy. Only each "thing" that we acquired lost its fascination after a while and we were on to the next "thing" we thought, when purchased, would relieve us of that empty feeling inside. It was a relentless cycle. The bottom line is we never really achieved lasting happiness with any of the things we purchased. Sooner or later we'd have a bad day or be in a bad mood and that "thing" we bought couldn't help us with that - it was just a "thing".

What were we really looking for? I believe we allowed ourselves to be distracted from what could really bring us lasting happiness and wholeness. In these changing times, we have a chance to slow down and really ponder the answer to this question. It's not a quick fix. We can't just buy our way into oblivion anymore.

I think we had things in the wrong order - happiness comes from within - that is were the beauty starts. This happiness comes from honoring our own inner beauty, our inner voice, our authentic self. True happiness is more beautiful that any object you could purchase - and when you radiate it out, others can reap the benefits at no charge. A family that is truly happy and emanates this kind of beauty doesn't necessarily have a lot of material things. The beauty comes from their inner connectedness, their love and compassion for each other, their bond when things are tough and their willingness to remain loyal to each other. This kind of beauty found in everyday life is healing and necessary for the changing times ahead. It is a solid foundation from which to build on.

Yes, I love beautiful things just as much as anyone. But I have learned that my children's love and support are more beautiful to me than anything I could ever buy. I started out helping people create and enhance their outer beauty, but what I realized is that no matter what you wear or what you buy, it cannot come close to the radiance that emanates from someone who has genuine self-love.

Energy and Properties of Crystals and Gemstones

Jewelry is such a great way to add interest and polish to an outfit. I love wearing jewelry. In fact, it is such a staple of mine that I feel almost naked without it. It instantly updates any outfit you are wearing. For example, you can transform a simple t-shirt and jeans with a "wow" necklace or add a stunning piece to your basic suit and it is instantly polished. I like to purchase jewelry pieces that are original and can be worn with many outfits. If I love something and it makes me feel good, I want to be able to wear it as much as possible. I also recommend a substantial piece of jewelry with your business outfits - it projects confidence and power. Daintier items can be worn casually.

There are a few ways to approach adding jewelry to your wardrobe. First of all, much of the costume jewelry available today is good looking, affordable, and a great way to add some pizazz. I highly recommend it. Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Macys, Nordstroms and others have a great selection of stand-out pieces that are sophisticated and polished.

Another way to add jewelry is by wearing crystals and gemstones. I want to talk about these in-depth because there is more to choosing and wearing a stone than it's color. Each crystal and gemstone carries a specific energy dynamic. Stones and crystals have been used since ancient times to help with healing, manifestation and protection. They are very powerful in helping to attract positive energies, protect you from negative energies and are also helpful with healing emotions or body ailments. There are many, many gemstones and crystals to choose from and work with. I have gathered some interesting and fun information on a few of the most popular and well-known stones.

Quartz Crystal - wearing a quartz crystal helps with patience and perseverance and gives you clarity of mind.

Amethyst - ancient Egyptians used amethyst to guard against fear and guilt. It helps to open spiritual and psychic centers. This stone is worn by Catholic Bishops ( I didn't know that!). It represents humility, sincerity and spiritual wisdom. It also can be used to relieve headaches and helps with general healing.

Emerald - the emerald is the stone of the Goddess Venus and a symbol of hope. It brings wisdom and reason and helps to heal the heart.

Jade - brings money into your life and is a protection stone to help guard against accidents. It is also a healing stone for the kidney, heart and stomach.

Lapiz Lazuli - In ancient times this stone was valued more than gold. It is one of the most powerful stones so use it with care. It brings clarity and was a symbol of truth for the Ancient Egyptians.

Black Onyx - helps to release negative emotions such as sorrow or grief. It can also help to end an unhappy relationship. It helps to defend against negativity directed at you, fortifies self-confidence and sharpens the senses.

Rose Quartz - the universal stone of love and healer of the heart, this stone gives a strong sense of self-worth and helps the wearer look younger.

Ruby - the most powerful stone, worn by those who are content and at peace - also increases self-love.

Turquoise - in ancient cultures, turquoise was the symbol of wealth. It gives strength and psychic sensitivity and offers protection from harm. It also takes on the characteristics of its owner. It is one of the oldest stones and brings the wisdom of basic truth.

Diamond - a symbol of innocence and constancy and power, the hardest gemstone and the most valued. The diamond does not have healing properties of its own, but further enhances the power of the gemstone it is paired with.

If you already have some of these crystals or stones, you can start experimenting with them - using them for specific purposes. Or you might want to consider purchasing a new stone or crystal to help reinforce the energy you need to move forward or to help with protection in certain situations. If one of your favorite stones isn't listed here - research it. You might find its energy properties in alignment with your energy needs. Otherwise, just appreciating and enjoying their beauty is enough.

F.R.E.E. I love the richness of the fall colors and the cozy feel of a sweater. There are many trends for fall that we can incorporate into our wardrobes in a way that makes us feel instantly "with it". Here are some highlights:

    * Clothes with a hint of the Far East - exotic, embroidered, and jeweled jackets, skirts, metallic dresses, jeweled purses and silk embroidered ballet flats (what a great way to give your jeans some pizazz).

    * Showing off your legs - with colored or patterned tights or if that is too bold for you - a smart pair of boots will do the trick (cowboy boots are especially hot right now). Even a pair of black or gray tights with a fun pair of shoes will pump up a suit. If you're up to it - high heels are always a great way to show off your legs - platforms are back and because of the platform are easier to walk in. Leggings are also great for wearing under skirts and pairing with flats or low boots.

    * Country earth tones, plaids, suede boots, and hard edged city looks like leather and metal.

    * Multiple white shirts in a variety of styles. Ruffled and romantic are some new options this season.

    * Jackets - large shoulder jackets are back again - the nice thing is they makes hips look smaller. Wear them with tapered pants or a pencil skirt for balance. Another option is a structured jacket paired with a skinny belt.

    * For special occasion dressing this season - add some sparkle to your basic black.

    * Necklines - the drape neckline is very popular this season. It gives you a "goddess" type look and is flattering to all figure types as it instantly camouflages flaws and draws the eye up.

    * Fur accents to gloves, hats, collars, etc - there are plenty of faux options to choose from as well.

    * Coats in bright colors will cheer up those dreary winter days or if you want to be more incognito, a camel coat is always a good investment - there are many belted options to choose from this season.

    * Cardigans in all lengths are popular as well. You can belt them or leave them unbuttoned. Ralph Lauren's fall line includes a brown leather trimmed cardigan paired with a brown leather skirt. Very chic!

Since this list can be overwhelming, pick a few things that appeal to you and add them to your wardrobe. I am frequently asked about dressing for over 40, 50 and 60. Most of these options look good on everyone. Overdoing one look is what gets people into trouble. If you wear an embroidered jacket, pair it will a simple pair of black pants or a skirt. The same goes for a ruffled blouse. Also, the older you are, keep the ruffles smart and sophisticated rather than overpowering. You want to appear simple and elegant.

As always, trust your inner instincts when deciding what looks good on you. Don't wear something just because it is "in style" at the moment. You need to feel great in your clothes. If something doesn't pass the "feel great" test, don't buy it.

The Power of a Vision

I found it interesting that during Y.E. Yang's interview after winning the PGA, he said that for quite a while, he had envisioned coming up against the best player in golf and winning. Contrast that with the fact that Tiger Woods had a very uncharacteristically frustrating day during the final round. I think that Y.E. Yang's vision was so powerful that there was nothing Tiger could do - he was playing a part in Y.E. Yang's "movie".

I was involved in a situation before where someone else's vision or belief was so powerful that I ended up playing a part in their "movie". It wasn't as big as the PGA where the stakes were so high, but it is still interesting. In fact, in this particular situation, I made a comment to a friend of mine that was intended to be a compliment, but it came out of my mouth in what sounded like an insult. No matter how hard I tried to explain myself and correct my original comment, I just kept making it worse - digging myself in deeper and deeper. In joking about it later, my friend and I were able to talk through the situation and as we did, we both realized what had happened. She had such a powerful "movie" or belief about herself that I could not counteract it. I had played my part and validated her belief without intending to. It is a very odd thing to experience.

This was a huge "aha" moment and one that I have not thought about until now. The bottom line is, we are such powerful beings and when we are focused on what we want or believe, that is what we create. The whole universe conspires to support us. Y.E. Yang gave us another example of this on a very large scale. It is inspiring!

How to Wear Colors to Your Advantage

In the past, I have talked about how clothing changes the way that you feel and affects how others respond to you. One aspect of this is through the colors you wear.

First of all, there are certain colors that look good on each of us. It is important to know what colors are your best colors - they make your features pop and give you a youthful, energetic look. This information also makes shopping easier because you can quickly discern what items to consider purchasing based on the knowledge of the colors that flatter you. Also, it is easier to coordinate additional clothing purchases with your existing wardrobe if you have a basic color palette to work from.

One school of thought is the "Color Me Beautiful" season analysis. Winter, Summer, Autumn, and Spring are the basic palettes to choose from in this system. Winter being jewels tones for people with dramatic coloring, Summer being a softer version of the cool winter tones, Autumn for rich, warm coloring and Spring for bright and clear coloring. While I think this is an excellent place to start, I feel that we don't need to accept these categories as rigid rules - rather we can sometimes crossover and find colors in another seasonal palette are also flattering on us. In addition, the make-up we use can also have an effect on what colors we can wear i.e. wearing more dramatic make-up vs. softer make-up. It is all an individual process.

Another way to look at color is the way it makes us feel. Advertisers and marketers have picked up on this correlation - for instance, take a look at McDonald's colors - yellow for hunger and red for action. Also, many doctor's offices use cool, soothing colors like blue to counteract to help calm their patients.

So how can we use color to change the way we feel or how others react to us? Knowledge of colors and their effects is very helpful. I have a good understanding of color and also did some research on-line to see what else I could come up with. Here are some suggested meanings:

Red: action, confidence, courage, passion

Pink: universal love, beauty, acceptance, contentment

Brown: stabilizing, solid, orderliness, convention, grounding

Orange: spice things up, increase creativity

Gold: wealth and prosperity, increased personal power

Yellow: wisdom, joy, happiness, mental intellect

Green: to expand, increase, grow, well-being

Blue: calm, solitude, peace, truth

Turquoise: youthful, fosters communication

Purple: royalty, good judgment, fosters imagination

White: clarity, wholeness, purity

Black: formal, potential, possibility

Gray: willingness to comply, security, maturity

Think about what you want to accomplish, the feeling you need to embody, or how you want to be perceived when deciding what color to wear. If you don't look good in a certain color like bright red for example, but really need to feel confident and energized, pick a different version of that color - maybe a warmer muted red or wear something that has red accents mixed in with another color that compliments you.

As I said in my opening greeting, I was fortunate to go to the PGA for the final round this last weekend. Since fashion and helping people look great is one of the things I love to do, I am always noticing what people are wearing. That being said, I was thinking about what the winner, Y.E. Yang, was wearing on this final round and it started a whole chain of ideas. First, I was thinking about how he could benefit from some advice on dressing as he was all in white - not very sophisticated looking. However, as I sat with that, another thought came to me. White means clarity - maybe wearing white gave him the ability to remain clear in the heat of battle and make good decisions under pressure.

On the flip side, I thought about how Tiger Woods always wears red on the last day of a tournament when he is in the running for the trophy. Red means action, confidence, courage and passion. Although he did not win the PGA this time, he still came in 2nd. All in all, this strategy is very often a winning formula for Tiger, which brings me to another point. If you find you are more successful when you are wearing a certain color - then do just that. Whatever the color, it is most likely empowering you and helping you reach your desired outcome. Trust it.

What is Beauty?

What is beauty? It has been said that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I do believe that we each have our own definition of what is beautiful. That is why there are so many different choices in the world - so each of us can honor our own authentic version of beauty in our lives. That being said, companies wanting us to buy their products try to sway our version of beauty by creating a desire in us for their particular product. While I believe in freedom of speech, I also see that this kind of "marketing" has gotten way out of hand in many ways. In particular, how women are portrayed and what is defined as "ideal" beauty. The ideal of the tall, slender, long-legged, perfectly proportioned woman that we see in magazines, on runways, etc. is only one kind of beauty. Yet we are being blasted with these images daily as something we need to achieve if we want true happiness. We have let ourselves and our daughters get caught up in this idea of beauty and it has us running in circles because we cannot be something that we are not. It also keeps us distracted from our true purpose.

I was in the check-out line recently at the local convenience store. As I was standing in line, I noticed the stand of tabloid magazines. On the cover of one, (this is not the first time I have seen this) were the unflattering paparazzi pictures of celebrities in their swimsuits with nasty headlines. It made me sad to see that people are still earning good money to find and take pictures of people in their worst moments. Obviously, there is a demand for it in the marketplace. No wonder some of us don't want to go out the door in the morning - who would with all of those expectations hanging over our heads!

Wouldn't it be wonderful if taking pictures of real women in their most beautiful moments - caring for a child, creating something brilliant, enjoying a special event, etc. was the norm? In another one of my favorite films "13 Going On 30", the main character creates a new magazine campaign focused on real women doing real things. She says these are the women to look up to. I agree.

I went to the theatre to see "Julie and Julia" this weekend. As I was watching the movie, It struck me how much Julia Child's husband loved her and desired her. She was not the "picture perfect" woman according to current standards , but she was a beautiful woman. She had so many gifts and a never-ending positive outlook on life. She embraced those gifts and ended up changing the world with her cooking.

I believe now more than ever we as women need to reach inside of ourselves, find our innate beauty, honor it and radiate it to the world. It is our duty. Otherwise, we are depriving the world of our much needed gifts. Beauty is very healing - and our world needs it. I can't think of a more important time to embrace being beautiful. Each of us has something unique to offer that no one else can - that is the essence of beauty. As my tag-line states "bring forth your inner light".

Once you find and honor your beauty on the inside, you are then in a mindset to take care of yourself on the outside. Honor who you are with beautiful clothing, a new haircut or color, a manicure, etc. You're not only uplifting yourself, but you are uplifting the world, which by the laws of karma will come back to you many times over.

Tips for Spring Cleaning and Freshening Your Wardrobe

This time of year we are naturally inclined to do a cleaning out of all the “clutter” opening us up to the newness of spring and the beauty of summer. Our wardrobe is an excellent place to “de-clutter”. What we wear is a very important representation of who we are. It sets our mood for the day and affects how others respond to us. Also, having a closet filled with clothes that you love and that look great on you is very empowering.

Begin by sorting your closet into seasons keeping summer items together and winter items together. Then divide your garments into business and casual sections. Organizing this way will make it easier to put outfits together in the morning, saving you time and energy.

As you are going through the items in your closet, put any items you have not worn in the last year (or more) in a group. Assess these items. What is the reason you have not worn them?

1. You are waiting to lose weight to fit into them.

2. You have lost weight and need to have them altered.

3. You really like the item, but have nothing in your closet to wear with it.

4. It is out of date and out of style.

5. It doesn’t fit right.

6. The color or style is not flattering.

7. You paid a lot of money for the item and feel you need to get some use out of it.

If you have lost weight and need to have clothing altered, you will want to talk to a tailor to make sure that altering the garment is possible and will not dramatically change its overall style. It may be easier and more cost effective to buy something new instead – it’s also a lot more fun! If you have an item of clothing you love, but have nothing to wear with it, make that a priority on your shopping list.

If you haven’t worn something in the last year, even if the item cost a lot of money, it is unlikely that you will wear it in the future. Think about taking the rest of your unworn garments to a consignment shop (if they are current styles and in excellent condition) or give them to a local charity. Wearing out-dated and unflattering styles or clothing that does not fit properly can be distracting and drain your energy.

Letting go of these items will free up your energy and space in your closet. You can then begin shopping for new items that will reflect and radiate who you are. Having current clothing styles (not necessarily trendy, but classic) gives you an added lift and portrays confidence.

Here are some tips to add some spring freshness to your wardrobe:

Replace worn shoes, purses and other accessories. New shoes, etc. give you a polished look and send others the message that you are put together and pay attention to details.

Treat yourself to a pedicure to get your feet in shape for open-toed shoes or sandals.

Add a crisp white blouse and a fresh white t-shirt. If your current ones have become dull or gray, which typically happens after one season of wearing– that is your cue to toss them and purchase something new.

Add a punch of color to your wardrobe with a fun purse, scarf, blouse, etc.

Regard yourself as a work of art. Set an intention to retain and purchase clothing items that represent your authentic self. Buy yourself something beautiful this spring– it doesn’t have to be expensive. In these challenging times, a positive attitude is important. Wearing clothing that makes you feel beautiful keeps you in a positive frame of mind and can give you that competitive edge. Remember, beauty transcends negative energy.
